Residential Docks, Not Marinas
Coral Gables' boating scene is fundamentally different from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or any other city we serve. The majority of boats are kept on private docks and boat lifts behind waterfront homes, not at commercial marinas. The city's three premier waterfront enclaves, Cocoplum (302 estates, 172 waterfront), Gables Estates (ultra-exclusive, docks accommodating 70 to 100+ foot yachts), and Gables by the Sea (360 homes on deep-water canals), all feature private docking as the default.
This means boat detailing in Coral Gables is overwhelmingly a mobile, on-site service performed at private residences, not a drop-off-at-the-marina operation.
George Merrick's 8-Mile Waterway
Unlike other South Florida cities where marinas were added to existing coastline, Coral Gables was master-planned in the 1920s by founder George Merrick with 40 miles of waterfront property and an 8-mile navigable waterway system connecting residential areas to Biscayne Bay. The Coral Gables Waterway runs from the bay westward through the city, past the University of Miami campus, curving north along Riviera Drive. Boating is embedded in the city's original urban design, and the canal system means boats are literally in residents' backyards.

Canal-Specific Detailing Challenges
Coral Gables' narrow residential canals create specific marine growth conditions. Canal water circulation is slower than open Biscayne Bay, concentrating algae and organic matter, especially in dead-end canal sections. Mangrove leaf litter, tannins, and organic debris stain hulls and waterlines, particularly in the narrower canal sections. Boats on lifts still accumulate barnacles on lower units, trim tabs, and lift cradle bunks when lowered for use.
Boats stored on residential lifts are also fully exposed to sun without the partial shade of covered marina slips. Gelcoat, vinyl, and canvas degrade faster, making regular ceramic coating or wax application critical.
Gated Community Access
A practical reality unique to Coral Gables: the three largest waterfront neighborhoods are all gated with 24/7 security. A detailing company needs to be on the guest/vendor list, often pre-approved by the HOA or homeowner. This creates a higher barrier to entry for detailers but also stronger client retention. Once a homeowner trusts a detailer enough to put them on the gate list, they tend to stick with that service rather than rotate through providers.
