Why Ceramic Coating for Your Boat?

South Florida's marine environment is one of the harshest in the country for boat surfaces. With UV index levels hitting 12 to 13 from April through September and year-round saltwater exposure in Biscayne Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway, gelcoat oxidation and surface degradation happen faster here than almost anywhere else.

A professional marine ceramic coating creates a chemical bond with your boat's gelcoat, forming a glass-like layer that:

  • Repels water, salt spray, and organic contaminants on contact
  • Blocks UV radiation that causes gelcoat to chalk and fade
  • Reduces barnacle and algae adhesion above the waterline
  • Makes routine wash-downs 3 to 4 times faster
  • Maintains a deep, wet-look gloss for 2 to 3 years

Unlike marine wax, which breaks down in 4 to 8 weeks under South Florida sun, ceramic coating is semi-permanent. It does not wash off, does not need monthly reapplication, and does not leave residue that attracts dirt.

Our Ceramic Coating Process

Every ceramic coating job starts with surface preparation. We never apply coating over oxidized, contaminated, or improperly prepped gelcoat. Doing so locks in imperfections and wastes your investment.

  1. Full marine wash: Hand wash with pH-neutral marine soap to remove salt, dirt, and organic matter
  2. Clay bar decontamination: Removes bonded contaminants (dock grime, water spots, industrial fallout) that washing alone cannot
  3. Multi-stage compound and polish: Corrects oxidation, scratches, and swirl marks to restore the gelcoat to a mirror finish. If your hull has significant oxidation, this step is where the transformation happens
  4. IPA wipedown: Removes all polish residue and oils so the ceramic bonds directly to clean gelcoat
  5. Ceramic coating application: Applied panel by panel with cross-hatch technique for even, full coverage
  6. Cure time: 12 to 24 hours before the boat contacts water, allowing the coating to fully harden and bond

What We Coat

Ceramic coating is not just for the hull. We apply it to every surface where protection adds value:

  • Hull and superstructure: The primary protection layer against salt, UV, and water staining
  • Windshield and glass: Hydrophobic coating that sheds rain and spray for better visibility
  • Stainless steel and chrome: Prevents salt pitting and reduces polishing frequency on cleats, rails, and hardware
  • Vinyl and upholstery: Optional UV and mildew-resistant coating for interior surfaces

Where We Work

We perform ceramic coating at marina slips and private docks across South Florida. Our mobile setup is self-contained , we bring water, power, and all equipment to your location.

Common service locations include Miami marinas (Dinner Key, Miami Beach Marina, Marine Stadium Marina), Fort Lauderdale yacht facilities, Boca Raton private docks, and West Palm Beach waterfront residences.

Ceramic Coating FAQ

How long does ceramic coating last on a boat in South Florida?

A professional-grade marine ceramic coating typically lasts 2 to 3 years in South Florida conditions. The intense UV exposure (index 12–13 from April through September) and constant saltwater contact break coatings down faster than in temperate climates, so annual inspections and maintenance washes are recommended to maintain hydrophobic performance.

Is ceramic coating worth it for a boat kept in the water?

Yes. For wet-slipped boats, ceramic coating provides a slick surface that resists marine growth adhesion above the waterline, reduces salt crystal bonding, and makes wash-downs faster and more effective. Below the waterline still requires antifouling paint, but the topside and superstructure benefit significantly.

What is the difference between ceramic coating and wax for a boat?

Marine wax creates a temporary sacrificial barrier that lasts 4 to 8 weeks in South Florida sun before breaking down. Ceramic coating chemically bonds to the gelcoat at a molecular level, creating a semi-permanent glass-like layer that repels water, salt, and UV for 2 to 3 years. Ceramic is more expensive upfront but costs less per month of protection.

Can you ceramic coat a boat with oxidized gelcoat?

Not directly. Ceramic coating bonds to the surface it is applied to, so if the gelcoat is oxidized, the coating locks in the dull, chalky finish. We always perform a full compound and polish correction to remove oxidation before applying ceramic, ensuring the coating seals in a glossy, restored surface.

How long does the ceramic coating process take?

A full ceramic coating job on a 30 to 40 foot boat typically takes 2 to 3 days. This includes a thorough wash, clay bar decontamination, multi-stage compound and polish correction, and then the ceramic coating application itself, which needs 12 to 24 hours of cure time before the boat touches water.

Do you offer mobile ceramic coating at my marina?

Yes. We perform ceramic coating at marina slips throughout South Florida, including Dinner Key Marina, Miami Beach Marina, and private docks. The boat does not need to be hauled out for topside ceramic coating, though we do need a dry day with temperatures above 50°F for proper curing.
