Routine Protection for South Florida Boats

Every boat in South Florida needs regular washing and waxing. Salt spray, UV exposure, bird droppings, dock grime, and waterline staining accumulate constantly. Without routine maintenance, these contaminants break down gelcoat, stain vinyl, pit metal hardware, and create conditions for mildew growth.

A professional wash and wax is the most cost-effective way to keep your boat looking good and protect your gelcoat between full details or ceramic coating applications.

What Our Wash and Wax Includes

  1. Fresh water rinse: Removes loose salt, sand, and debris before any contact with the surface
  2. Hand wash: pH-neutral marine soap applied with soft wash mitts, working section by section from top to bottom
  3. Waterline cleaning: Targeted cleaning of the scum line and waterline staining with marine-grade cleaners
  4. Hardware rinse: Cleats, rails, hinges, and fittings rinsed and wiped to prevent salt crystal buildup
  5. Chamois dry: Full hand-dry to prevent water spots from forming on the hull and glass
  6. Marine wax application: Hand-applied marine-grade wax buffed to a protective, glossy finish

Why Marine Wax Matters in South Florida

Wax is a sacrificial barrier. It sits on top of the gelcoat and absorbs UV radiation, salt, and contaminants that would otherwise attack the gelcoat directly. When the wax breaks down, you reapply it. When the gelcoat breaks down, you need oxidation removal or gelcoat restoration, which costs significantly more.

In South Florida's extreme UV environment, marine wax typically lasts 4 to 8 weeks before it needs reapplication. That is shorter than what most wax manufacturers state on the label, because their recommendations are based on average US conditions, not subtropical sun with a UV index of 12 to 13.

Wash and Wax vs. Ceramic Coating

Both protect your boat, but they work differently:

  • Wash and wax: Lower cost per visit, needs reapplication every 4 to 8 weeks. Ideal for boats on a regular maintenance schedule or as a maintenance layer on top of ceramic coating
  • Ceramic coating: Higher upfront cost, lasts 2 to 3 years. Better long-term value for boats that need set-and-forget protection

Many of our clients use both: ceramic coating as the base layer, with periodic wash and wax service to keep the boat clean and maintain the coating's hydrophobic performance.

Wash and Wax FAQ

How often should I wash and wax my boat in South Florida?

In South Florida, we recommend a full wash and wax every 4 to 8 weeks for boats kept in the water. The intense UV (index 12 to 13 from April through September) and saltwater exposure break down wax faster than in temperate climates. Boats on trailers or lifts can go slightly longer between applications, but should still be waxed at least monthly during summer.

What is the difference between a boat wash and a boat detail?

A wash and wax is a maintenance service: hand wash with pH-neutral marine soap, rinse, dry, and apply a coat of marine-grade wax. A full detail includes everything in a wash and wax plus compound and polish correction to remove oxidation and scratches, interior cleaning, and potentially ceramic coating. Wash and wax maintains your boat between details.

What kind of wax do you use?

We use marine-grade carnauba and polymer-based waxes specifically formulated for gelcoat. We do not use automotive wax on boats. Marine waxes are designed for the UV intensity and salt exposure that boat surfaces face, and they do not contain fillers that can mask underlying gelcoat damage.

Can you wash my boat at the marina without getting the water dirty?

Yes. We use biodegradable, marina-approved cleaning products and follow EPA and local Clean Marina guidelines. We contain rinse water and runoff where required by the marina. All of our products are phosphate-free and safe for marine environments.

Is wash and wax enough to protect my boat from oxidation?

Wax provides short-term protection (4 to 8 weeks in South Florida sun) against UV and salt. It slows oxidation but does not stop it permanently. For longer-lasting protection, we recommend ceramic coating, which lasts 2 to 3 years. Wash and wax is ideal for routine maintenance between ceramic coating applications or for boat owners who prefer a regular service schedule.
